Pakistan vs England 1st Test Day 5 Highlights: England achieved a remarkable victory by defeating Pakistan by an innings and 47 runs on the fifth day of their record-breaking first Test match. Despite a fightback from Pakistan, England dismissed the hosts for 220, with Abrar Ahmed unable to bat due to illness. Jack Leach played a key role by taking 4 wickets in Pakistan’s second innings. Babar Azam, despite stepping down from captaincy, failed to perform, scoring only 5 runs in the second innings after making 30 in the first.
In this match, Pakistan’s captain Shan Masood won the toss and chose to bat first. Pakistan posted a strong total of 556 runs in their first innings, with centuries from Shan Masood, Abdullah Shafique, and Agha Salman. However, they were unprepared for England’s response. Despite losing Ollie Pope early, England’s batting lineup, led by Harry Brook and Joe Root, put up a spectacular display.
Brook and Root’s Dominant Performance
England was at 249-3 at one point, and it looked like they might not reach 500. However, Joe Root and Harry Brook formed a historic partnership of 454 runs. Root scored 262 runs, while Brook hit his first triple century, making 317 runs at a strike rate of over 98. Brook’s innings was particularly impressive and became the highlight of the match. Pakistan had responded well with 556 in their first innings but couldn’t keep up the pressure in second innings and eventually folded under England’s strong bowling attack.
Starting the day 5 at 152-6, Pakistan’s Salman Agha was dismissed for 63 after a solid partnership of 109 runs with Aamer Jamal. England’s bowlers, particularly Jack Leach, played a key role in breaking this partnership. Aamer Jamal, who had earlier sustained a blow to the head from Brydon Carse’s bouncer, fought back with an unbeaten 55. England dropped several catches, but Leach’s all-round performance helped them close the match. Leach took two wickets on Day 5, including a spectacular caught-and-bowled to remove Shaheen Afridi, before dismissing Naseem Shah to secure the win.
Pakistan Collapses at Home
England declared their innings at 823-7, gaining a lead of 267 runs. With a day and a half left to bowl out Pakistan, the visitors wasted no time. Pakistan struggled in their second innings, with half the team back in the pavilion at just 59 runs. Agha Salman once again played a key innings and build a 109-run partnership with Aamer Jamal who remained unbeaten on 55. However, after Salman’s dismissal, the remaining batters were bowled out for just 29 more runs and England won this Multan Test by an innings and 47 runs to lead 3 Matches Test Series by 1-0. Now Pakistan and England will clash again in the second Test at same iconic Multan Cricket Stadium, starting on October 15.
